In the evening a “Colourful Concert” took place, organized by Yoga in Daily Life Prague, in the Salvator Church, in the heart of the city. This concert of spiritual music performed by famous Czech musicians marked the opening of the 5th International Youth Conference, entitled: “Save the Earth”.

On Saturday morning, in the International Youth Conference at Boheminan Hall “Hagibor” in Prague, youths from numerous countries gathered ,as well as renowned artists and dignitaries from the fields of politics and science, among them the representative of the Ministry of Education of Czech Republic and Mr. Manuel Perez from UNESCO, from Barcelona, Spain.

The Conference was opened by His Holiness, Mahamandaleshwar Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda (Swamiji). In his opening speech, he said that Yoga in Daily Life is a worldwide organization whose aims include support for peace, tolerance and understanding among young people, accessible education for the young, and ensuring that the older generation leaves the Earth to them at least in the same condition as their parents left it to them, if not better.

alt

Swamiji emphasized the importance of ethics and morals in educating young people, because the young are the culture of tomorrow. It is up to the adults, however, to educate them. Education should not be limited to attending school – social education in the family, and learning to respect tradition, are just as important. Today, millions of children live in broken families – especially in so-called developed countries. Yet, for children, loving and understanding parents are more important than money and toys.

In their presentations the young speakers presented lots of interesting facts that concern us all, such as:

  • The negative impact of increasing meat production, based on FAO figures: 16,000 litres of water are consumed to produce one kilogram of meat, while one kilogram of potatos requires only 160 litres, i.e. 100 times less. Meat production is also a major source of water and soil pollution and contributes to hunger in the world. Also according to the FAO, meat production would need to be halved in order to stop the further environmental degradation of our planet. The FAO and UNESCO have said that vegetarianism is one way to help improve the environment, address the growing crisis in access to safe water, and feed the growing global population.

  • Chemicals are responsible for 18-30% of all work-related diseases. Toxins are all around us – in furniture, electrical devices, cosmetics, cleaning agents, and even in clothing. Exposure to toxic substances can disturb a child’s development even before it is born.

  • An estimated 280,000 children aged 9-12 work on cacao plantations in West Africa from where more than 70% of the cocoa production originates, putting in long hours in very poor conditions. The situation is similar in the production of other commodities such as bananas, rice, tea, coffee, etc. Since 1997, the Fair Trade mark has provided a way for consumers to distinguish products produced under fair conditions for farmers and agricultural workers, and help put a stop to child labor in the third world.

  • Czech Republic (population approx. 10 million) produces 30 million tons of trash each year.

  • The divorce rate in Europe is more than 40%. Each day, in just the Czech Republic, 80 children learn that their parents have divorced.

  • The building industry represents nearly 50% of world energy consumption, buildings are a major source of greenhouse gases. The design of a “passive energy house” consumes 5 – 9 times less energy per square meter than a conventional house. The passive energy house design even makes use of air filtration and recirculation to recuperate waste heat radiated from people, PC monitors, etc.

Youth Union 4th Conference

Children from classes 2, 3, 4 and 9 performed a drama about their ideas of a Happy Family, and the need to cultivate and protect trees. They also sang traditional songs and performed folk dances from Rajasthan as well as a splendid Yoga demonstration of the sequence Guru Pranam.

alt

Swamiji reminded the participants that Yoga joins both soul and nature: "Yoga has a vast meaning. It is not just a matter of physical exercise, but Yoga enables one to go deep inside, to know the Self."

Swamiji's message was that we are all united - soul, humanity and nature, and that humans are the custodians and guardians of the planet.

He also reminded the Conference that "Children are the culture of tomorrow" and therefore need to be educated in a way which will develop their good habits, in order to live a healthy life.

“Happiness cannot be found by fulfilling the senses, we must learn to sacrifice - to discover for ourselves the difference between want and need. Mahatma Gandhi was a living example of it. His famous saying was 'Renounce and Rejoice!'.

alt

Swamiji stated that if our necessities of life are less, happiness will come about more easily. With regards to the environment, Swamiji reinforced the need to protect our trees - in fact, all of the flora and fauna. Each person must take an individual stand. Youth must be educated and made aware of their responsibilities to their environment - to reduce waste, to recycle and to conserve water. The Government cannot be relied upon to do this, it is up to the individual to take personal accountability.

On the subject of a Unified India, Swamiji expressed his sadness:

"We are not free in our own land. We have to take a permit like a passport from the government, to go to Manipura and Meghale. We are Indian but prohibited to enter our own territory. Youth should come out and rally hard to rectify this. The youth of today are the ones who will solve this problem. We can only guide and help them."

Youth Union 3rd Conference

About 50 children and youth (from 5 to 25 years) with their parents from 12 different countries (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Monte Negro and Serbia, New Zealand, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, USA) took an active part in the event. Additionally, the Conference was also very seriously taken by adults, who came in great numbers to listen to children's pleads. Many prominent guests appeared at the Conference and some more expressed their support, among them high representatives of Czech Republic authorities and non-governmental organizations:

Mrs. Livia Klausova, wife of the current president of Czech Republic and Mrs. Dagmar Havlova, wife of the previous president of Czech Republic. Mrs. Zuzana Paroubkova, wife of the Prime Minister of Czech Republic, Mr. Ramesh Chander, representative of Indian Embassy, Mr. Libor Ambrozek, Minister of environment, Mrs. Petra Buzkova, Minister of Education. High representatives of Yoga in Daily Life international organizations attended as well and expressed their support and admiration to the activities of the youth.

alt

The youth presented their thoughts and ideas through drawings, poems, essays and performances of music, songs, dance and plays. Rather serious themes were addressed with simplicity and innocence innate to children, but it all resulted in very clear statements about how the world should look like and how people should be to be able to create an atmosphere of love, peace and fruitful coexistence of all living beings. And to show us, that positive ideas must be turned into practice, each of the children selected a wow for him- or herself to keep and act upon to help make the world a better place to live in.

The wows of children included: positive thinking, positive attitude towards people that are different as themselves, anger management, sorting of litter, protecting animals, cleaning the nature from garbage.

His Holiness Swamiji, the initiator and patron of the Conference, gave the closing speech and emphasized the importance of the themes the youth addressed. "Children are our future," he said, "and how our children are brought up, so the future world will be. Therefore it is very important that we give them a good example in ourselves and teach them also about the spiritual principles."
