Introduction

The international yoga conference "YOGACON-2004" will be held from 16th to 18th of January, 2004, in Jaipur/India. The main theme of the Conference will be "Yoga in daily life for harmony of body, mind and soul". The opening session will take place at Birla Auditorium, Statue Circle, Jaipur, the best & well equipped auditorium in Rajasthan. Subsequent sessions will be in nearby Totuka Sabha Bhawan, Narain Singh Circle, Jaipur.

The conference carries the blessings of His Holiness Mahamandaleshwar Yogiraj Swami Maheshwaranandaji Maharaj and is sponsored by Rajasthan Swasthya Yoga Parishad from Jaipur.

Background

Late Shri Jaswant Singh Sanghi having himsesf experienced the benifits of Yoga was moved to propagate these age-old knowledge of India's great Rishis for the benefit of the people of Jaipur and with an eye for whole of Rajasthan. An institution by the name of Rajasthan Swasthya Yoga Parishad (RSYP) was formed in the year 1974 and was registered. He devoted his life for this mission and was successful in obtaining a big piece of land on New Police Academy Road in the heart of Shashtri Nagar, Jaipur, at very concessional rate from the Govt. of Rajasthan, where a huge three storied building of the name of YOG BHAWAN stands today – a fitting tribute to his memory.

After the passing away of Shri Sanghiji, Sarvashri J.P. Bhartiya, R.D. Baheti, S.K. Jindal, R.P. Pareek, Gajanand Shah & N.M. Katariya took over the charge as president of this esteemed institution under the guidance of our Chief patron, Dr. Rameshwar Sharma, Ex-Vice Chancellor of University of Rajasthan & Administrator of Mahavir Cancer Hospital, Jaipur.

As one of the biggest Yoga institute of Rajathan, RSYP has been doing its bit in spreading Yoga through 20 Yoga Centers in Jaipur and the surrounding area. It has arranged more than 500 yoga camps and has spread the message of yoga amongst more than 25,000 people of all religions. RSYP has it´s own well furnished large building, running naturopathic hospital and Yoga Centre at Yoga Bhawan, Police Academy Road, Shastri Nagar, Jaipur. It has also organized yoga conferences from time to time, the last being "YOGACON-98", which was attended by more than 500 delegates from all over India.

Programmes & themes

The inauguration of the Conference will take place on 16th January, 2004 in the afternoon and full day sessions will follow on 17th & 18th January 2004. The programme of the Conference will include:

  • Plenary sessions with address by key note speakers
  • Paper presentation and interaction with the audience
  • Panel discussions and symposia
  • Practical oriented sessions to highlight different approaches and application of yogic practices

Except the plenary session, other sessions may be concurrent.

English and Hindi language will be used throughout the conference.

Just as Yoga means only Hatha Yoga to most of the general public, similarly Hatha Yoga is often understood only as Asanas (including shatkarma, bandhas and mudras). It is the ground reality. Without understanding and practising Asanas, one can not make any true progress in Hatha Yoga. The organisers of the Conference therefore thought it fit to convey the correct and proper knowledge of the Asanas through papers from reputed scholars and through display of Asanas stage by stage by Yoga experts. The aim is to eliminate the wrong notion that Asanas are very difficult to perform. With this view the topics of discussion will be:

  • Asanas – their concept and importance
  • The philosophy of Asanas
  • Asanas for body ailments and chronic diseases
  • Asanas in female diseases
  • My experiences/experiments with Yoga
  • Yoga, the all pervasive
  • Yogic diet/food
  • Role of yoga in modern school education
  • Practical aspects of yoga – demonstration of asanas, kriyas, pranayams & meditation
  • Yoga – values and spirituality
