50 years of the Eternal Light in Vienna
Golden Jubilee of Mahaprabhuji Ashram
On 10 July 2026, devotees from across the world gathered in Vienna to celebrate a remarkable milestone in the history of the Yoga in Daily Life system – the 50th anniversary of Mahaprabhuji Ashram, the very first Yoga in Daily Life ashram established in the West by Vishwaguru Mahamandaleshwar Paramhans Sri Swami Maheshwarananda Ji.
Fifty years earlier, on Guru Purnima, 10 July 1976, Vishwaguruji consecrated the ashram at Schikanedergasse 12, in Vienna, by lighting an oil lamp on the altar dedicated to his Grand Master, Sri Deep Narayan Mahaprabhuji. That sacred flame has burned continuously ever since, becoming a symbol of devotion, spiritual wisdom, peace, and the unbroken guru parampara.
The Eternal Light
Reflecting on the significance of this sacred place, Vishwaguruji once said:
"This Ashram is holy for us. This Holy Eternal Light burns here for the whole world – for peace, harmony, spirituality and as a blessing for all living beings and humanity."
He compared the growth of Yoga in Daily Life to a seed that gradually develops into a mighty tree.
"Yoga in Daily Life started here in this beautiful city of Vienna. Hundreds of thousands of people have come here to learn yoga for their health, spiritual development and harmony."
For five decades, countless devotees have offered their seva – selfless voluntary service – to preserve and develop this holy place. Generations of practitioners have meditated, served, learned and grown spiritually within its walls.
Vishwaguruji also recalled the immense blessings bestowed upon the ashram through the visits of his revered Master, Hindu Dharmsamrat Paramhans Sri Swami Madhavananda Ji, who stayed there on three occasions for extended periods.
"His presence has left behind spiritual light and spiritual power. Spirituality is never lost."
Speaking about the responsibility entrusted to every disciple, Vishwaguruji reminded everyone:
"Our duty is first to purify the heart, then to purify our emotions – to overcome desire, anger, greed, attachment and ego, and cultivate devotion, wisdom, detachment, compassion and forgiveness."
He described Vienna as the sacred spiritual seat of Yoga in Daily Life in the Western world:
"In this Western Hemisphere, this seat in Vienna is our Holy Seat. From this Holy Light, light another light – 'Jyota Se Jyota Jagāvo'. Just as one flame lights another, enlightenment is passed from one heart to another. The light is already within us. It will guide us and protect us."
A Day of Devotion
Throughout the day, hundreds of devotees visited Mahaprabhuji Ashram to offer prayers, meditate before the Eternal Light, and receive darshan (holy presence of the Master). The atmosphere was filled with gratitude, devotion and remembrance as bhaktas from many countries gathered to honour the place where Yoga in Daily Life first took root in Europe.
The celebrations continued with prayers and puja led by Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji.
Honouring Fifty Years of Spiritual Service
As Mahaprabhuji Ashram could not accommodate all the participants, the evening satsang was held at Guruji Ashram, Trubelgasse 19, Vienna. The programme began with a welcome address by the president of the Yoga in Daily Life Association in Austria, Bhaktanand (Boris Bonev).
A moving multimedia presentation then took everyone on a journey through the early years of Vishwaguruji's mission in Europe. Historic photographs and rare video footage illustrated how a young Indian yogi introduced authentic yoga to the Western world in its complete form with āsanas, prāṇāyāma, haṭha yoga kriyās, mantras, kīrtans, bhajans, meditation, and the profound spiritual philosophy that later evolved into being internationally recognised as The System, Yoga in Daily Life.
The presentation also honoured Vishwaguruji's extraordinary literary work. Many of his pioneering books were first written and published in Vienna before being translated into numerous languages, making authentic yogic wisdom accessible to people around the world.
Among the publications highlighted were:
- The System, Yoga in Daily Life
- The Hidden Power in Humans – Chakras and Kundalini
- Lila Amrit – The Divine Life of Sri Mahaprabhuji
- Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, Samadhi Pada – Translation and Commentary: Mahamandaleshwar Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda
- Yoga for Children
- Gesundes Herz mit „Yoga im täglichen Leben“ (A Healthy Heart with Yoga in Daily Life, currently available in German)
- Bluthochdruck – Hilfe durch Yoga im täglichen Leben (High Blood Pressure – Relief Through Yoga in Daily Life, currently available in German) )
- Diabetes – Hilfe durch Yoga im täglichen Leben (Diabetes – Relief Through Yoga in Daily Life, currently available in German)
Long-standing Austrian devotees, including Swami Shanti Ji, Radha, Hemlata, Muktamani and Bhaktanand, shared heartfelt memories of the early years with Vishwaguruji and reflected on his remarkable, selfless work over the past five decades. They recalled how, from this humble beginning in Vienna, he created the integral and internationally acclaimed Yoga in Daily Life System – a comprehensive path of practices for physical health, mental balance, spiritual development, and self-realisation. From Europe, Vishwaguruji spread this unique system throughout the world, for the welfare of humankind and all living beings, inspiring hundreds of thousands of people to live healthier, more harmonious, and more conscious lives.
"Now It Is Our Responsibility"
Addressing the gathered devotees, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji spoke about the spiritual responsibility inherited from Vishwaguruji. He reminded everyone that Vienna is not merely the birthplace of an organisation, but the sacred place where the divine mission first began.
"Vienna is the tapasthalī where the divine light first ignited. This flame spread from here into every heart."
Reflecting on the anniversary, he said:
"Fifty years of the ashram have passed. Now the task is to sustain the next fifty years. The guru said, 'I did my job, now you do."
Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji explained that the guru removes the greatest obstacles from the disciple's path, while the remaining inner work must be accomplished through one's own discrimination (viveka), practice and sincere effort.
He encouraged everyone to perform their kriyā and karma (work) selflessly, without attachment to results, reminding those gathered that the guru's role is to reveal the path, while the disciple must walk it.
Speaking about the essence of discipleship, he emphasised:
"The relationship between guru and disciple is the only perfect thing."
He urged everyone to strengthen unity within the Yoga in Daily Life family:
"Remove selfishness and replace 'I' with 'we.' Vishwaguruji always spoke of 'we'; never 'I' and 'you'."
Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avatar Puri Ji also reminded devotees that the deepest spiritual knowledge is preserved in bhajans and Vishwaguruji's lectures, encouraging everyone to revisit them repeatedly, discovering ever deeper meanings.
He concluded with practical guidance for daily life:
- believe in yourself, in order to believe in others;
- practise awareness while speaking, and patience while listening;
- seek peace within;
- support one another with faith and compassion;
- remain steadfast in satsang;
- let go of attachments, remembering that everything in the material world is temporary.
"We came with nothing, and we will leave with nothing."
